Top 10 FinishersHONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's cross country squad rose up in its own Homecoming competition, making its fourth and final meet appearance on the island of O'ahu on Saturday morning at Kap'iolani Regional Park, following sophomore
Montana Martinez to the first team victory of the 2015 season.
"We are very pleased with the efforts of everyone today," cross country coach
Tim Boyce said. "Many personal bests set by those who have mainly competed on O'ahu. We are also very pleased with our team finish despite holding out two of our top runners. We're looking forward to our last away meet before turning our focus to conference."
Taking on the largely flat, grass course as a new on-island 5k venue, Martinez topped the Rainbow Wahine for the first time this season with a second place finish and time of 18:23.4—the highest-placing UH runner this season. Martinez led UH last year in every meet in which she competed.
Martinez finished just 13 seconds ahead of this season's most-frequent scoring leader, freshman
Camille Campos, who came down the chute in 18:36.7 and placed third overall. Crossing in sixth, junior
Caitlyn Foss registered a time of 19:08.1, while freshman Sabrina Sterbus was seventh with a new season-best of 19:08.6 and classmate
Haley Beaumont rounded out all five Rainbow Wahine scorers in the top 10 with a ninth-place mark of 19:20.9.
Hawai'i Pacific sophomore Johanna Apelryd finished first overall with a mark of 18:21.9.
In addition, Rainbow Wahine track and field athlete and former cross country runner
Louise Mulvey ran a time of 18:33—a personal record and 47-second improvement on her career best at UH—and finished third in the overall standings. As an unattached runner, Mulvey was not officially recorded in the final results.
Logging a season-best score of 27 points, the Rainbow Wahine claimed its first team victory of the 2015 campaign, defeating HPU (38), BYU-Hawai'i (58) and host Chaminade (116).
Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine were
Tristan Setzer (PR, 14th, 20:02.7),
Jade Vaughan (PR, 21st, 21:08.3),
Alison Bowman (PR, 24th, 21:31.3),
Paige Sullivan (PR, 27th, 21:44.6) and
Emily Stack (33rd, 23:32.7).
With all the local meets under their belts, the Rainbow Wahine have one regular season meet remaining, as they wrap up at the Bronco Invitational on Oct. 17 in Santa Clara, Calif. The next stop is a Halloween visit to Riverside, Calif., for the Big West Championships, where the Rainbow Wahine are primed to improve on their ninth-place performance of a year ago.
