Women's Hoops Hits The Road To Face UC Davis, UC Irvine

DAVIS, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (9-7, 1-2 Big West) hits the road this week for games at UC Davis (8-8, 3-1 BWC) and UC Irvine (3-15, 0-3 BWC).
 
The Rainbow Wahine broke into the win column this past week with a 69-58 win over UC Riverside on Saturday night. Destiny King had a career night, with career-highs of 17 points, eight field goals made, six steals, and 39 minutes played. She was just one rebound shy of recorded a double-double. Ashleigh Karaitiana came through with key baskets, scoring 13 of her 15 points in the second half to help lift the 'Bows to their first conference win. She too finished the game a rebound short of a double-double. Making her return to the court after missing the first two conference games was senior Shawna-Lei Kuehu who tallied 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting with five boards, two assists and a steal. Hawai'I's defense held the high-scoring Highlanders to 58 points—almost 12 points below their season average while outrebounding UCR, 49-to-30 with an 18-to-5 advantage in offensive rebounds.
 
Overall, Kuehu continues to lead Hawai'i averaging 13.4 points and 7.2 rebounds and 19 blocked shots. Karaitiana is averaging 10.8 points a game with 6.0 rebounds and a team-high 25 steals and 39 assists. Morgan Mason is close behind with 10.2 points a game to go with 38 assists and 4.3 boards.

Coaches: Hawai'i head coach Laura Beeman has a 43-35 record in her third season at UH. Prior to coming to the Rainbow Wahine, Beeman compiled a 390-110 record as the head coach at Mt. San Antonio JC. UC Davis' Jennifer Gross is in her fourth season at the helm of the Aggies. She has a school and career record of 52-55.
Series History: Hawai'i holds a slight 4-3 edge in the win column against the Aggies. Last season, the two teams split their series with both home teams winning. UH won 64-50 (Jan. 23, 2014) in the Stan Sheriff Center, while UCD won a close game in Davis, 56-52 (Feb. 22, 2014).

UC Irvine head coach Doug Oliver is in his third season as well. He has a 29-51 overall record with the Anteaters.
Series History: Hawai'i holds a 24-8 record against the Anteaters. Last year, UH won in convincing fashion, 85-59 at home (Jan. 25, 2014) but squeaked out a one-point win on the road, 55-54 (Feb. 20, 2014).
