Box Score (pdf)MISSOULA, Mont. – The University of Hawai`i women's soccer team got back on the winning track with a 3-1 win over Eastern Washington in the opening match of the Montana Invitational Friday afternoon at South Campus Stadium.
Five days after a bitter 5-4 loss at Idaho State, UH (4-5) rebounded with its second win in three road matches this year. The Rainbow Wahine continued their scoring spree, having now scored 11 goals in three matches on the mainland.
UH also put together its best defensive effort of the year, limiting EWU (2-3) to just six shots and two on goal. The 'Bows allowed just one Eagle goal, after surrendering multiple goals to seven of the previous eight opponents.
UH got on the board first in the 24th minute when
Kama Pascua scored with an assist from
Ashley Haruki. It was the third goal of the season for the sophomore and second in as many matches. UH continued its trend of fast starts. It marked the seventh time in nine matches this year that UH struck first.
EWU answered when Chloe Williams put one in the back of the net for the Eagles to make it a 1-1 match just seven minutes later. But UH re-seized the lead in the 41st minute when
Storm Kenui scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season off an assist from
Sonest Furtado. It was a score that held until halftime as UH enjoyed an 11-2 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes.
The Rainbow Wahine got an insurance goal in the 54th minute when senior midfielder
Hayden Gibson scored her first career UH goal. Gibson scored off a rebound after
Ryan Daniel's shot went off the crossbar.
Erica Young got the starting nod in goal and picked up her second win of the year, while notching one save.
The Rainbow Wahine will close out the tournament and its four-match road trip with a meeting versus host Montana on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 1:00 p.m. MT/9:00 a.m. HT.
