Live Scoring DAVIS, Calif. – University of Hawai'i senior multi-event athlete
Kaleigh Morrison captured the gold medal in the heptathlon at the Big West Conference Championships Saturday at UC Davis' Toomey Field & Woody Wilson Track.
The Tigard, Ore., native totaled a personal-best 5,210 points to become the second UH athlete to capture heptathlon gold in as many years.
Samantha Balentine won the event last year while Morrison finished seventh.
Entering the day in second place after totaling 3,010 points in Friday's first four disciplines, Morrison quickly retook the lead with the day's best long jump and a personal best 19-5.25 (5.92m). She then threw a huge PR in the javelin with a throw of 134-4 (40.96m) to take a commanding lead of over 250 points heading into the 800-meters, the final event.
After crossing the finish line in 2:30.34, Morrison was able to beat UC Riverside's Danielle Littleton by 165 points. Her Day 2 total was nearly 100 points better than her previous best and her overall total of 5,210 eclipsed her PR that she set last month by 24 points.
Morrison's gold is UH's sixth in the heptathlon over the past nine conference meets.
Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine was sophomore
Kayla Kirk who finished in 15
th place with 3,815 points.
The Big West Championships continues next Friday and Saturday in Davis, Calif.
