Box ScoreINDIAN WELLS, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior tennis team's season came to a close on Sunday with a 4-1 loss to Cal Poly in the championship match of the Big West Championship held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
The Mustangs (11-12) grabbed the early lead after winning at first and third doubles to claim the doubles point. After losing at No. 1, UH (8-12) responded when
Jonathan Brooklyn and
Carter Lam won 8-5 over Devin Barber and Corey Pang. Cal Poly won the doubles point on the three court when Jurgen De Jager and Ben Donovan edged
Chas Okamoto and
Marcel Chan, 8-6.
The 'Bows evened the match when
David Schuster earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 5 against Matt Thomson. De Jager then beat Okamoto at the three 7-5, 6-0 to take back the lead for good.
Donovan topped Brooklyn at the one 6-1, 7-5 and Naveen Beasley clinched the title for Cal Poly with a 7-5, 6-3 win over
Pavel Liska on the six court.
The Rainbows Warriors close the season as Big West regular season champions and advanced to the tournament final in just their second season in the league.
