Box ScoreIRVINE, Calif. – On the final day of the regular season, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior tennis team rallied for a 4-3 win over UC Irvine on Saturday at Anteater Tennis Stadium to claim at least a share of the 2014 Big West Conference title.
The 'Bows (7-11, 4-0 BWC) went undefeated in league play, winning two Big West road matches this past week. With the win, Hawai'i remains in contention for a No. 1 seed and first-round bye in next weekend's Big West Tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.
UC Irvine (11-16, 1-4) sailed through doubles play, sweeping all three matches to take a one-point lead.
Chas Okamoto tied the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jonathan Hammel in the first singles contest to finish, but Rafael Davidian regained the lead for UCI with his straight-set win at the four over
Danilo Casanova.
Hawai'i took a brief 3-2 lead off wins by
Nils Schuhmann and
Pavel Liska, but UCI evened the match once again with when Caryl Hernandez scored a win at No. 5 singles to send the deciding point to the No. 1 court.
With everything on the line, UH's top player
Jonathan Brooklyn came through in the clutch and rallied to beat Ryan Cheung 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to give the 'Bows the win.
