HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i softball team (9-8, 0-0 Big West) fell to California, 10-1 in five innings to start the Jack in the Box Spring Fling Tournament on Wednesday night.
Heather Morales suffered the loss, dropping her record to 6-5 on the season.
California jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead after the first half inning of play. Their frame was highlighted by a three-run home run by Danielle Henderson; two bases loaded walks, a three-run double by Kylie Reed and an RBI-single by Breana Kostreba. Cal scored four runs before Hawai`i was able to get their first out of the game.
UH got one run back in the bottom of the second with two outs.
Sharla Kliebenstein drew a walk and then
Sarina Jaramillo drilled a double off the centerfield fence. The shot drove in Kliebenstein who sprinted all the way from first to score UH's only run.
Cal posted one more run in the top of the fourth, on an RBI-single by Jordan Wallace past a diving
Jazmine Zamora st second which allowed Ashley Decker to score from second.
Morales faced 12 batters, and lasted just 2/3 of an inning. She gave up nine runs on six hits with four walks.
Loie Kesterson came in relief in the first inning with two outs. She threw a solid 4.1 innings keeping the Golden Bears at bay. She allowed just one run on four scattered hits with a walk and two strike outs.
Keiki Carlos closed the game, tossing the final scoreless inning.
For Cal, Katie Finch earned the win raising her record to 3-1. She threw all five innings, allowing one run on three hits with four walks and five strike outs.
The Spring Fling tourney continues on Thursday with Pacific taking on California at 4:00 pm and Hawai`i then facing Pacific at 6:00 p.m.
