HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (12-10, 0-0 Big West) shut out Valparaiso, 8-0 in five innings on the opening night of the Pepsi Rainbow Wahine Classic.
Loie Kesterson fired the complete-game, two-hit shut of the Crusaders on Thursday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
For Kesterson, it was her second career shut-out and first of the 2014 season. She threw 5.0 innings and had two strike outs and five walks. It also marked her 10th complete game of her career.
The 'Bows got on the board in the first inning, posting two runs.
Jazmine Zamora started the rally with a one out single to leftfield. Zamora advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored after
Keiki Carlos then drilled a double to the right-centerfield gap. A groundout to second moved Carlos to third and after a walk to
Kayla Wartner,
Ulu Matagiese lined a single to right-center to score Carlos. On the play, Wartner tried to stretch out her run to third, but was thrown out by the centerfielder.
Hawai'i then exploded for six runs in the third inning to extend its lead to 8-0. The combo of Zamora and Carlos struck again with Zamora leading the inning off with a single to left and Carlos followed with a home run that sailed over the left-centerfield fence. It was Carlos' third home run of the season and her eighth homer of her career. After a flyout to center, the 'Bows kept things going with Wartner drawing her second walk of the game. Matagiese then hit a single to right to put runners at first and second.
Sharla Kliebenstein then laid down a sacrifice bunt, but on the play the throw from the pitcher sailed over the second baseman covering first allowing Wartner to score. Valpo then lifted their starter, Taylor Weissenhofer and put in Sierra Pico in the pitching circle. Jaramillo did not let up, lacing a double to the left-centerfield gap to drive in both Matagiese and Kliebenstein. A groundout to second moved Jaramillo to third and
Lindsey Willmon then hit a ground out to the rightside of the infield to score Jaramillo to give the 'Bows an 8-0 lead.
Valparaiso entered three pitchers in the game. Weissenhofer threw the first 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits with two walks and a strike out. Pico lasted just one out, allowing three hits and a run while Ashleyn Michalak closed the game, throwing the final 1.1 innings.
Carlos went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run with three RBI and two runs scored. Zamora went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Matagiese and
Kaile Nakao both had two hits apiece. For Carlos, she extended her hitting streak to seven games and she has now reached base safely in nine straight games.
Hawai`i will play a doubleheader on Thursday night. First they will face James Madison at 6:00 pm and then BYU at 8:00 pm.
