St. Mary's scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. The Gaels got back-to-back doubles to start the inning by Lollie Fitzpatrick and Giana Bilotta for one run. Then after a fly out to center, Brittany Sabatini hit a double to the right-centerfield gap to drive in Bilotta from second to give SMC an early 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, St. Mary's added another run to their lead on a solo shot to left-centerfield by Cassidy Szeredy. St. Mary's led 3-0 after three-and-a-half innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, Burton brought UH within one run with a two-run bomb that she drilled over the rightfield fence. The home run was the third hit of the junior's career.
