Women's Hoops Concludes Homestand Against BYU-Hawai‘i

Game Notes

HONOLULU-The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team concludes its seven-game homestand against in-state rival BYU-Hawai'i this Saturday, December 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Stan Sheriff Center. Hawai'i is looking to rebound after falling last week against Pacific, 69-61.

A trio of seniors lead Hawai'i, scoring over 10 points a game. Shawna-Lei Kuehu continues her solid play for the Rainbow Wahine, averaging team-highs of 13.5 points and 7.9 rebounds through the first eight games. She also leads UH with 22 assists (tied with Morgan Mason) and 10 blocked shots. Kuehu is now just 15 points shy of the 1,000 point milestone. Currently she has 985 career points and has averaged 9.6 per game during her career which spans six seasons. If she can hit 1,000 points, she will be just the 10thRainbow Wahine in history to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

Ashleigh Karaitiana is the only Rainbow Wahine to post double-digit points in all eight games this season. She is averaging 11.8 points a game and leads Hawai'i with 11 made 3-pointers and 18 steals. She also leads UH with a .810 free throw percentage (17-for-21) Karaitiana's best statistical game came against No. 14 California (Nov. 21) when she tallied her first double-double of the year with 14 points and 11 rebounds. She leads the team averaging 36.2 minutes per game and has played the entire game twice this year-45 minutes in the overtime game at Colorado State and 40 minutes against Cal. Most recently, she logged in 39 minutes against Pacific (Dec. 6) before fouling out late in the game when UH was fouling the Tigers.

Morgan Mason completes UH's high-scoring triumvirate as she is averaging 10.1 points per game. She is tied with Kuehu for the most assists on the squad and is third in steals and fourth in rebounds. Mason has scored in double-figures four times this year--with a career-high 23-point perfomance at Denver on UH's first roadtrip.

Hawai'i has lost its last three-straight games to No. 5/4 Stanford, No. 11/12 Stanford and Pacific. The three game streak ties for the longest under head coach Laura Beeman. UH has fallen in three straight twice under Beeman, once in 2012-13 (Arkansas, Oklahoma, Utah) and once last season (at USC, at Grand Canyon, and against Cal Poly).

BYU-Hawai'i is 3-2 overall thus far and is led by Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo who is averaging a team-high 14.0 points with 4.8 rebounds per outing. Tatupu-Leopoldo is a long-range sharp-shooter who has made a team-high 14 treys this season and is 10-of-13 from the free throw line. Celeste Claw is a scrappy player who is second on the team averaging 12.8 points with a team-high 38 assists and 11 steals. She has sunk 10 3-pointers for the Seasiders. Whitney Fieldsted is scoring 11.6 points per game and has pulled down a team-high 9.6 boards per game. Hawai'i is officially 12-0 against BYU-Hawai'i-7-0 in Honolulu.
