Women's Basketball Falls to Pacific, 69-61

HONOLULU-The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (4-4, 0-0 Big West) fell to Pacific, 69-61 on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Shawna-Lei Kuehu scored a team-high 19 points while both Ashleigh Karaitiana and Morgan Mason added 10 points apiece. Pacific improved its record to 5-2 overall while Hawai`i fell to 4-4 on the year.

Kuehu recorded her third double-double of the season, pulling down 10 rebounds to go with her 19 points. She shot 9-for-17 from the field and also had a team-high four assists. She is now just 15 points shy of becoming the 10thRainbow Wahine in history to post 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

Karaitiana continued her streak of double-figure scoring, notching her eighth double-digit game in as many games this seaon. She scored 10 points on 4-for-14 shooting with two 3-pointers and eight rebounds. She played 39 minutes before fouling out late in the game. Mason was 4-of-11 in field goals and also had eight rebounds. Both Karaitiana and Mason dished out two assists apiece as well.

Although UH jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead to start the game, it was the Tigers who went on an 11-to-2 run to take a five point lead (13-8) with 12:38 left in the half. Later with Pacific leading by seven. Hawai`i closed the half on a 14-to-5 run as the 'Bows held Pacific without a field goal in their last nine attempts of the half. UH on the other hand, made three of their last five shots end on a 6-to-0 run to go into the half with a 31-29 lead. Kuehu led all scorers with nine points while King had five boards to pace UH.

Pacific came out of the half and took immediately took control of the game. Early in the second half, the Tigers went on a 14-to-1 run that staggered Hawai`i and from which they could never quite recover from. But it was not for lack of trying as the 'Bows struggled mightily down the stretch. With less than two minutes left in the game, Kuehu spurred UH on with a layup to trail by seven (60-53) with 1:41 left in the game. Karaitiana followed by draining one of her two treys on the night to cut their deficit to five. Later, off an assist by Destiny King, Shawlina Segovia nailed a 3-pointer at the top of the arch to come to within four points of the Tigers, but that would be as close as UH would get. Pacific would make 8-for-10 of their free throws with less than a minute left in the game.

As a team, Hawai`i out-rebounded the Tigers, 48-to-37 and outscored Pacific in the paint, 36-to-24. However, Pacific shot 8-of-18 from beyond the arch and out-scored the 'Bows, 19-to-8 in points off of turnovers. UH comitted 18 turnovers to Pacific's 11. The Tigers' reserves also outscored UH's subs, 15-to-8.

It was the first time in 14 games in Honolulu that Pacific came away with the victory. The former Big West foe was 0-13 in Hawai`i coming into today's game. Overall, the 'Bows lead the series, 27-10. Pacific got revenge after Hawai`i came from being down by 18 points to win last year in Stockton, 81-70.

Hawai`i returns to the court in a week's time to take on BYU-Hawai`i on Dec. 13 at 7:00 p.m. before hitting the road for a pair of games in California. They will face Loyola Marymount on Dec. 20 and then Cal State Bakersfield on Dec. 23.
