Women's Hoops Continues Roadtrip at CSU Bakersfield

Bakersfield, Calif.--The Univeristy of Hawai'i women's basketball team (6-4, 0-0 Big West) concludes its second roadtrip of the season with a game at CSU Bakersfield (8-3, 0-0 WAC) on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 1:00 pm at the Icardo Center. The Rainbow Wahine captured their third straight road win at Loyola Marymount this past Saturday (Dec. 20) to begin their Cali trip, while the Roadrunners won their eighth game of the season notching a victory over UNLV on Sunday.

Overall, a trio of Hawai'i seniors who are averaging over 10 points a game, led by Shawna-Lei Kuehu who currently has team highs of 12.9 points and 7.5 rebounds a game plus a team-leading 14 blocked shots and 28 assists. Ashleigh Karaitiana is second on the team averaging 11.7 points and leads UH with 19 steals and 12 3-pointers made. She is third on the team with 5.2 boards a game and tied for second with 25 assists. Morgan Mason is also having a solid senior campaign, averaging 10.9 points and 5.0 rebounds as a point guard. She is tied with Karaitiana with 25 assists and as made the most free throws on the team, shooting 35-for-48 from the charity stripe.

Last time out...
In UH's win at LMU, both teams had momentum swings in both halves. But in the second half, the 'Bows built an early 14-point lead, but the Lions would roar back to lead by six with 5:14 left in the game. Hawai'i however did not panic, instead they went on a 12-to-0 game-winning run to retake the lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the game. Although UH did not make a field goal in the last 4:16 minutes, the 'Bows made 17-of-22 free throws in crunch time in the last three minutes of the game.

Mason led Hawai'i with 19 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor. She shot 11-of-14 from the free throw line-including 9-of-12 free throws in the final 1:25 of the game. She also had four rebounds and two assists in just 19 minutes of action due to early foul trouble.

Three Rainbow Wahine-Karaitiana,Destiny King, andDalayna Samptonall tallied 12 points and Shawlina Segovia added 11. Karaitiana was just 2-for-12 in field goals, but went 8-of-10 from the charity stripe to keep her streak of double-digit point games alive at 10. She has scored at least 10 points in all of UH's games thus far this season. King was 4-of-9 in field goals and a perfect 4-of-4 in free throws with six boards, two assists and three steals. King was fouled with the game tied at 70-70 with 1:49 left and gave UH the lead for good by sinking a pair of free throws that helped turn the tide. Sampton came from off the bench to record her second-straight game with double-digit points with 12. She went 6-for-9 while corralling six rebounds with a steal.

It is the first time since the 2005-06 season that the Rainbow Wahine have started the season with a 3-0 road record.

CSU Bakersifield Roadrunners (8-3, 0-0 WAC)
The Roadrunners have raced out to an 8-3 record to start the 2014-15 season. CSUB is a perfect 6-0 at home at the Icardo Center and is 2-3 in away games. CSU Bakersifeld is 3-0 against Big West schools thus far this season. They defeated UC Irvine 80-70 on Dec. 3; UC Riverside 66-65 on Dec. 6, and UC Irvine on the road, 68-65. Senior Tyonna Outland leads the Roadrunners averaging 17.8 points a game and has 31 assists, 17 steals with 57 rebounds. Brooklynn Hinkens has started all 11 games and is averaging 11.8 points and 3.6 boards a game with a team-high 26 made 3-pointers. Batabe Zempare leads CSUB with 9.4 rebounds a game and Alyssa Shannon has dished out a team-high 61 assists while swiping a team-high 19 steals.
