Hawai`i Downs UNLV, 79-70; Morris Pours in 21 Points

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (3-1, 0-0 Big West) bounced back on Sunday night to defeat UNLV, 79-70. Junior center Connie Morris poured in a career-high 21 points and led two other Rainbow Wahine with double-figure points. Destiny King added 14 and Ashleigh Karaitiana chipped in 13 points in the win on the final night of the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.
 
With the exception of a tie at 2-2 with 19:34 left in the first half, Hawai`i led the game from wire-to-wire. The 'Bows held a double-digit lead for much of the second half, and lead by as much as 15 points with 13:45 left in the game.  Hawai`i edged UNLV on the boards, 46-to-44 and outscored the Rebels in the post, 44-to-38. The Rainbow Wahine also had the advantage in points off of turnovers (20-to-9) and second chance points (21-to-12). As a team the 'Bows shot a season-high 45.6% in field goals (31-for-68). It marked the second victory for UH over a Mountain West school. The 'Bows opened the season with a 63-58 overtime win at Colorado State.
 
Morris was an efficient 10-of-13 from the floor with a seven rebounds in 25 minutes of action. Fourteen of her points came in the second half when she shot 7-of-8 in the paint. King was 4-of-7 in field goals with a trey and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. She added four rebounds with a game-high six assists. Karaitiana went 4-of-10 in field goals and was also 5-of-6 from the free throw line with three rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Shawna-Lei Kuehu pulled down a team-high eight rebounds with three points, two assists and a steal.
 
Marissa Wimbley sparked UH in the first half, coming in off the bench to spark the 'Bows with eight points—including two treys. Shawlina Segovia also contributed, scoring nine points with six boards and an assist.
 
The Rebels' Danielle Miller scored a game-high 26 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Her teammate Alana Cesarz added 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to help pace UNLV.
 
No. 14 California won the 2014 Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic, after defeating Missouri, 82-70 in the first game of the day.
 
Next up for Hawai`i is the high-powered Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout with No. 1 Stanford, No. 11 North Carolina and Prairie View A&M coming to town. The 'Bows open with Prairie View A&M on Nov. 28 at 4:30 p.m.
