FORT COLLINS, Colo.-The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season with a bang, knocking off Colorado State in overtime on the road, 63-58 at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo. Destiny King and Shawna-Lei Kuehu both recorded double-doubles to lead the Rainbow Wahine to the first season opening win for head coach Laura Beeman.

King led UH with 14 points to go with 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals. She was 4-of-13 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the free throw line--which includes two clutch free throws with 52-seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 50-50 to force overtime. King also calmly sank two free throws with 11-seconds left in overtime to seal the win. It was King's second double-double of her career.

Kuehu scored 12 points with a team-high 11 rebounds in just 18 minutes of action. Kuehu scored UH's first four points of the game, but was shackled with two early fouls that forced her to sit the last eight minutes of the first half. She started the second half, but picked up her third foul early at the 17:56 mark which forced her to the bench. Kuehu re-entered the game with 10 minutes left, but then picked up her fourth foul with 8:37 left in the game. She then sat until there was four minutes left in regulation and played the rest of the way. She was 5-of-9 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. She also dished out three assists with two blocked shots and a steal. It was her third career double-double.

Ashleigh Karaitiana added 12 points with two treys and four boards while Morgan Mason scored eight points with a career-high 10 rebounds. Mason helped lift UH in overtime with a 3-pointer that gave them a 59-55 with 1:09 left in the game. For the third time in her career, Karaitiana played all 45 minutes of the overtime game.

The Rainbow Wahine went on a 17-to-5 run to vault out to a 10-point lead with almost 13-minutes left in the first half. But the Rams would start to chip away and ended the half trailing Hawai'i by just one point, 29-28.

The 'Bows started the second half with a 3-point shot made by Karaitiana, but Colorado State then went on a 12-to-1 run to take a seven point lead with 12:26 left in regulation. The Rams held UH without a field goal for seven minutes during their run. Hawai'i, however, would fight back to knot the game at 44-44 on a Shawlina Segovia jumper from the top of the key. The Rams would retake the lead with a minute left, but King tied the game at 50-50 making both free throws.

In overtime, the 'Bows outscored Colorado State 13-to-8. Kuehu accounted for six of the 13 points in the extra frame. In all, the game was tied seven times with five lead changes.

Hawai'i out-rebounded the Rams 54-to-48 and outscored their opponents 32-to-18 in the paint. But UH committed 24 turnovers which led to 18 Colorado State points. The Rams also outscored Hawai'i 15-to-12 in second-chance points and 19-12 in bench scoring.

The win avenged last year's 65-60 overtime loss to Colorado State on Nov. 29, 2013. The win was Hawai'i's first win against the Rams and are now 1-4 against Colorado State, who was picked to finish first in the Mountain West Conference this season. Hawai'i is now 3-5 in road season openers and 24-16 in their season openers. The Rainbow Wahine have opened the last three seasons on the road under Beeman.

The Rainbow Wahine will remain in Colorado as they head down to take on the Denver Pioneers on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 1:00 p.m. (MT).
