HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team swept 12
th-ranked Ohio State, 25-22, 25-21, 25-21 on the first day of the Outrigger Volleyball Invitational Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Warriors (1-0) opened the tournament with an impressive offensive ouput, hitting .360 for the match as four players tallied at least eight kills. Junior opposite
Brook Sedore led the way with 11 kills and three aces while middles
Taylor Averill (8) and
Nick West (8) combined for 16 kills on .545 hitting. Outside hitter
Sinisa Zarkovic added nine kills and two aces.
Andrew Lutz and Driss Guessous each had eight kills for the Buckeyes (0-1).
UH scored three straight for a 10-7 advantage in Set 1 and would not relinquish that lead the rest of the way. In Set 2, the Warriors jumped out to an early 11-6 lead before watching the Buckeyes close to within 23-21. A kill by
Jace Olsen and an OSU hitting error gave UH the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Sedore's first of two aces in Set 3 put the Warriors ahead 8-5 and they pushed their lead five at 21-16 before closing out the match 25-21.
In the first match of the tournament, seventh-ranked UCLA (1-1) outlasted No. 11 Penn State 25-15, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 16-14. UCLA's Robart Page had a match-high 23 kills with just two errors, hitting .525. Aaron Russell had a team-high 19 kills for the Nittany Lions (0-1).
The tournament continues on Friday with UCLA and Ohio State at 4:00 p.m. followed by Hawai'i and Penn State at 7:00 p.m.
