BERKELEY, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team fell to No. 16 California, 4-0, on Thursday afternoon at the Channing Tennis Courts in Berkeley, Calif.
The Golden Bears got off to the early lead in doubles play. California's No. 1 pair of Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton swung past UH's
Jonathan Brooklyn and
Danilo Casanova 6-3. The 'Bows
Marcel Chan and
Carter Lam played a hard match against Cal's Ben McLachlan and Mads Engsted with their match going to the final set. They fell short 6-5 (1), which gave the Bear's the doubles point.
Cal would continue riding their momentum in singles play as they gained victories as UH's
Pavel Liska fell to Mads Engsted 6-1, 6-2.
Chas Okamoto put up a great effort, but he too fell short against Cal's Gregory Bayane 6-1, 6-2. It was up to the 'Bows Casanova to keep UH's match hopes alive against Filip Bergevi. After dropping the first set 6-3, he struck back in the second set which got stretched to a tiebreaker. Casanova would fall short in the tiebreaker (10-4), thus sealing California's victory.
The Rainbow Warriors will face Pacific in Stockton, Calif. on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 2:00 p.m. PT.
