Men’s Tennis to Venture on West Coast Road Trip

Jonathan Brooklyn won Big West Player Of The Week Honors
HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team (1-0, 0-0 Big West) will make its first road trip of the spring season as the 'Bows will play at No. 40 Stanford (Jan. 29), No. 16 California (Jan. 30), and Pacific (Feb. 1).

The Rainbow Warriors are coming off a solid win against Sacramento State, edging the Hornets 4-3. Jonathan Brooklyn and Carter Lam both played great matches to propel the 'Bows to the opening win. Lam  cruised to a 6-2 win in doubles with his partner Pavel Liska, and defeated the Hornets' Ayman Abdulwahab 6-3, 6-5 (7-5) in singles. Brooklyn also swung past his singles and doubles opponents with his partner Danilo Casanova defeating Marek Marksoo and Tom Miller 6-3 in doubles and turning back Marksoo again in singles in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. For his stellar play Brooklyn won the Big West Tennis Athlete of the Week award.

Stanford (2-1, 0-0 Pac 12) is ranked No. 40 in the country. The Cardinal posted a 12-12 record last spring.  Sophomore Trey Storbel led the team in victories, finishing with a 21-10 record. UH last played at Stanford in 2012 with the Rainbow Warriors coming up short 6-1.

California (3-0, 0-0 Pac 12) comes in undefeated and ranked 16th in the nation. The Bears feature two players ranked in the top 125 for singles,  #85 Andre Goransson, and #74 Campbell Johnson. Johnson posted a 28-13 record and claimed the Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year award. He then reached the NCAA round of 32 in doubles, and the round of 64 in singles. California defeated Hawai'i back in 2009, 6-1.

The 'Bows close the road trip against Pacific (1-1, 0-0 West Coast). Junior Denis Stolyarov returns to lead the Tigers. He led the team last year in wins, posting an overall record of 19-14. Pacific edged out UH in a nail biter last season 4-3.
