Track & Field Passes First Test At UW Indoor Preview

SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team kicked off the 2014 season with the University of Washington Indoor Preview, Saturday at Dempsey Indoor.

A total of seven UH athletes placed in the Top 10 of eight events including junior Zhane Santiago, who tied for second in the long jump and was seventh in the 60-meter hurdles. The Hau'ula, O'ahu native jumped 18-4.25 (5.59m), just one inch off her personal best set last season, and was also among seven qualifiers for the 60-meter hurdle finals, where she placed third in her section with a time of 8.82 seconds.
 
Four athletes posted personal best marks in five events including senior Kaleigh Morrison in the long jump and 60-meter hurdles. The Tigard, Ore., native won her flight in the long jump at 18-1.75 (5.53m), which was good for fourth overall among the 50 competitors, and also competed in the 60-meter hurdles and won her prelims at 9.12 seconds.
 
In the triple jump competition, newcomer Rachel Toliver won her flight with a mark of 39-3 (11.96m), which was the second best jump among the 34 competitors. The freshman from Los Angeles, Calif., also competed in the 60-meter dash, finishing in 8.11 seconds.
 
Sophomore Charlinda Ioane took third overall in the shot put with a heave of 44-10.25 (13.67m) and won her flight in the weight throw (47-3/14.40m).

In all, 11 athletes achieved 18 UH all-time Top 10 performances. Twelve of those marks were new additions to the list. Santiago had three Top 10 marks while Morrison, Toliver, Iaone, Raion Black and Samantha Esperanza each had two.
 
At the Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev., UH's three vaulters finished in the top five of their heat, including freshman Amber Kozaki, who took top honors with a clearance of 12-5.5 (3.80m). Seniors Cecilia Durocher and Juli Powell each cleared 11-9.75 (3.60m) to finish second and fifth, respectively.
 
The Rainbow Wahine will next host their first Sunrise Series meet of the season Saturday, Jan. 25 with the Sunrise Meet #1 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Field.
