Busy Week for Women’s Tennis Begins with Nevada

Sarah Gealer earned UH's lone win against No.19 Baylor
HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team has busy week ahead with three scheduled matches. The Rainbow Wahine will play against Nevada on Tuesday, Jan. 14; No. 65 San Jose State on Thursday, Jan. 16; and Washington to end their week on Saturday, Jan. 18. All matches will be played at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine are looking to bounce back from a tough 6-1 loss in their 2014 season opener against No. 19 Baylor this past week. Sophomore transfer Sarah Gealer earned UH's sole win in a tough battle against the Bears' Alex Clay defeating her in consecutive sets 6-4, 6-3. In doubles play, UH's Gealer and Paulina Petriskova were the closest to earning a victory, leading 4-3 against Baylor's Jordaan Sanford and Alex Clay. They were not able to finish the match due to Baylor capturing the doubles point with wins in the first two doubles matches.

Nevada is making their spring season debut. The Wolf Pack last played in November in the San Jose Invitational. Nevada had a solid showing, accumulating nine victories during the three day Invitational. They are led by senior Michelle Okhremchuk who last season posted a 23-8 record in singles, and 28-6 mark in doubles. She also earned all-Mountain West singles and doubles honors.

San Jose State is also opening their spring season in Hawai'i. The Spartans come into 2014 ranked 65th in the nation, marking the first time that their program is opening up a season ranked. Their doubles pair of Gaelle Ray and Marie Klocker is ranked 47th. They posted an impressive win over California doubles pair Lynn Chi and Annett Schutting who were ranked 11th, in the Stanford Invitational last October.

Washington opens up their season against Hawai'i also having last played in the San Jose State Invitational in November. The team went won 13 matches last season, including a 7-0 victory against the Rainbow Wahine. Julija Lukac led the team in singles victories, her final record being 22-13. Grace Ysidora and Natali Coronel led in doubles wins, going 18-7 for the Huskies.
