HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team opened the 2014 season against No. 19 Baylor on a slightly rainy Saturday afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. The Bears defeated the Rainbow Wahine, 6-1 with UH's Sarah Gealer coming away with the team's lone victory.
 
Baylor captured the doubles point, to start the match. Baylor's 37^th-ranked, No. 1 pair of Victoria Kisialeva and Blair Shankle defeated UH's Xenia Suworowa and Cindy Nguyen, 6-2. The Bears' No. 3 duo of Kiah Generette and Alex Leatu defeated Hawai'i's Kelsey Daguio and Rebecca Faltusz, 6-1. UH's Sarah Gealer and Paulina Petriskova were leading Jordaan Sanford and Alex Clay, 4-3 but did not finish their match.
 
The skies then opened up and deluged the courts with rain which delayed the match a couple of hours. The Bears then rolled in the singles match capturing four of six matches in straight sets. On the No. 1 court UH's Nguyen battled No. 38 Kiah Generette, but fell 6-1, 6-3. Hawai'i's Gealer was able to capture UH's only win on the day, defeating Alex Clay, 6-4, 6-3. The 'Bows' No. 2 player, Suworowa retired after the first set due to injury.
 
Rule changes to note: this year, doubles matches will only play to six games instead of an eight-game pro set. Teams will also not warm up against each other, instead teams will warm up on their own and then start the match straightaway. In singles, if the match is tied at one set apiece, there will be a 10-point tiebreaker played instead of a full third set.
 
The Rainbow Wahine have a busy week ahead in their first week back in school. The 'Bows take on two former Western Athletic Conference foes, Nevada and San Jose State and end the week against Washington of the PAC-12. UH takes on the Wolf Pack on Tuesday, Jan. 14 and the Spartans on Thursday, Jan. 16—both matches starting at 2:00 p.m. The Rainbow Wahine's match vs. the Huskies will be on Saturday, Jan. 18 with first serve slated for 11:00 a.m.
