The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team delivered a strong opening performance at the Credit Union 1 Mountain West Fall Tennis Individual Championships at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, Nev., highlighting their day with an impressive doubles sweep and a pair of hard-fought singles victories.
In doubles action, Hawai'i proved dominant across the board. The pairing of Hannah Galindo and Makeilah Nepomuceno set the tone, leading 6-0 before closing out the match with an 8-2 victory over UC Davis' Isabella Bringas and Vivian Galiaway. Building on that momentum, Tennielle Madis and Grete Gull secured the doubles sweep for the Rainbow Wahine by defeating Grand Canyon's Claudia Sofia Martinez Solis and Amalia Suchiu 8-5. The UH pair were tied at 3-3 before winning five out of the final seven games.
Singles play brought some gritty, competitive battles across all five UH matches. Tennielle Madis led the way with a straight-set triumph over Air Force's Shivaani Selva, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7). Grete Gull also added to Hawaii's win total by going the distance against New Mexico's Ana Veroux, rebounding and pulling away in the third set for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 victory.
The remaining singles matches saw tight contests that ultimately went to the opposition. Stefi Aludo suffered a heartbreaking, down-to-the-wire loss against San Jose State's Emma Fanusis, falling 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (10-8). Hannah Galindo showed great resilience by taking her second-set tiebreaker before falling to UC Davis' Ramey Yu in three sets, 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, while Makeilah Nepomuceno dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Grand Canyon's Claudia Sofia Martinez Solis.
The Mountain West Fall Tennis Individual Championships continue at the Darling Tennis Center on Thursday, Oct. 22.
