SEASIDE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team begins the 2013-14 season with the Saint Mary's Invitational, Monday, Sept. 23 and Tuesday, Sept. 24 at the Black Horse and Bayonet Golf Course.
The tournament features 19 teams, including host Saint Mary's and fellow Big West schools Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Irvine, and UC Riverside. Also competing in the tournament are Akron, Ball State, California, Florida Gulf Coast, Fresno State, Kansas State, Loyola Marymount, North Carolina State, Oregon, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Clara, and St. John's.
Participants will play a total of 54 holes, 36 on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. Monday's round begins with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. PT at the Bayonet Golf Course followed by the second round at the Black Horse Golf Course. Tuesday's final round is scheduled for a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. PT at Bayonet.
Bayonet Golf Course is a par-72 played at 7,104 yards while the Black Horse Golf Course is par-72 at 7,024 yards.
The tournament is in its eighth year with the last four played at Bayonet and Black Horse. Host Saint Mary's is the defending champion.
Competing for the Rainbow Warriors are seniors
Nainoa Calip and
Tommy Yamashita, juniors
Brian Lee and
Ryan Kuroiwa, and freshman
Skye Inakoshi. Last season, Calip led the team with a 74.7 stroke average in 10 tournaments.
Head coach
Ronn Miyashiro is in his 16
th season at the helm of the Rainbow Warrior golf program. The 11-member squad will compete in nine tournaments this season, including the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in November and the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in February, both of which UH will host on Kaua'i at the Princeville and Wailua Golf Courses, respectively.
