NAPA, Calif. — The University of Hawai'i men's golf team completed a grueling 36-hole opening day at the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational on Monday, finishing the first two rounds in 12
th place. Competing at the historic Silverado Country Club, a long-standing host for the PGA Tour, the Rainbow Warriors posted a two-round total of 587 (+11).
UH showed flashes of high-level play early in the day, carding a collective 285 (-3) in the opening round. However, the narrow, tree-lined fairways of the North Course proved more taxing during the afternoon session, as the team slid back with a second-round 302 (+14). Despite the afternoon struggle, UH remains within striking distance of a top 10 finish, sitting just 10 strokes behind UC Davis.
Nathan Szpakowicz once again anchored the Hawai'i rotation, opening the tournament with a stellar 3-under 69, featuring sharp ball-striking on the demanding greens. He followed with a 75 in the afternoon to finish the day at even-par (144), placing him in a tie for 33
rd individually.
Sophomore
Dane Watanabe provided steady for the Rainbow Warriors, entering the clubhouse in a tie for 45
th. Watanabe turned in an even-par 72 in the morning before carding a 74 in the second round for a two-round total of 146 (+2). Senior
Alec Hilgers also contributed a counting score in the opening round with an even-par 72, eventually finishing the day tied for 56
th at 148 (+4).
Rounding out the UH lineup,
James Whitworth and
Chris Salem are currently tied for 60
th place with a two-round total of 150 (+6). Whitworth opened with a 72 before the challenging afternoon conditions led to second-round 78 while Salem carded 73 and 77.
BYU currently sits atop the 14-team leaderboard after a dominant opening-day performance, posting a 28-under 548. The Cougars are led by individual leader Kihei Akina, who fired a 12-under-par 132 (65-67) to hold a three-stroke advantage over the field.
The tournament, which is part of the PGA TOUR Pathway to Progression program, provides the Rainbow Warriors with professional-level atmosphere and exposure to career development resources. The event serves as a critical bridge for student-athletes seeking access to professional golf opportunities.
The final round is scheduled for Tuesday.
