TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team completed a grueling three-round stretch at the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate on Tuesday, finishing in 14
th place at the Tucson Country Club.
Facing a powerful field that included host Arizona and several top-ranked programs, the Rainbow Warriors posted a 54-hole total of 926 (+62). After play was suspended due to darkness during Monday's second round, the 'Bows returned early Tuesday morning to finish their remaining holes before immediately transitioning into the final 18.
Nathan Szpakowicz emerged as the top finisher for the Warriors, leading the squad with a consistent effort throughout the tournament. Szpakowicz posted a three-round total of 226 (+10) to earn a tie for 63
rd place. His performance was highlighted by a steady second-round 74 (+2), which helped anchor the UH lineup during the most demanding stretch of the event.
Following closely behind was
Dane Watanabe, who carded a total of 232 (+16) to finish in 75
th place. Watanabe showed improvement as the tournament progressed, shaving strokes off his opening-round score to card a 75 (+3) in Tuesday's final round. His resilience in the desert heat provided a boost for the team as they looked to close out the competition on a positive note.
Rounding out the lineup for the Rainbow Warriors were
Alec Hilgers,
James Whitworth, and
Chris Salem. Hilgers finished 77
th with a total of 234 (+18), followed by Whitworth in 78
th at 236 (+20). Salem completed the UH contingent in 79
th place with a three-round score of 238 (+22). While the final scores reflected the difficulty of the 7,533-yard course, the tournament offered valuable experience against elite competition.
Host Arizona claimed the team title with a dominant 25-under performance, narrowly edging out Long Beach State by one stroke. Individually, LBSU's Alejandro De Castro captured medalist honors at 13-under 203, three strokes ahead of Arizona's Filip Jakubcik.
The Warriors will next compete in the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational, March 23-24 in Napa, Calif.
