Alvarez Finishes 16th At NCAAs; Earns Second Team All-America

NCAA Day 3 Field Results

EUGENE, Ore. – University of Hawai'i triple jumper Amanda Alvarez placed 16th at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Alvarez entered the competition seeded sixth, however, she fouled on her first two attempts and settled for a 41-11.5 (12.79m) on her third jump. The senior from Vancouver, Wash., just missed on a possible personal-best mark on her second attempt but narrowly clipped the board. She still posted the seventh-best mark in her heat but was not one of the top nine to qualify for the finals.

San Diego State's Shanieka Thomas captured the national title with a mark of 46-4.75 (14.14m). Kansas' Andrea Geubelle was second at 44-8.75 (13.63m) while Texas A&M's LaQue Moen-Davis placed third at 44-8 (13.61m).

By finishing 16th, Alvarez was selected as a second-team All-American. She completes her career as the Big West champion in the triple jump and bronze medalist in the long jump. She is the school's outdoor triple jump record-holder as well as heptathlon event record holder in the long jump.

Alvarez is the first triple jumper in school history to compete at the NCAA Championships.

The NCAA Championships concludes the 2012-13 athletic season for University of Hawai'i.
