NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – University of Hawai'i senior
Samantha Balentine is in first place following the first day of the heptathlon at the Big West Track and Field Championships, Friday at Cal State Northridge's Matador Complex.
The senior from Lodi, Calif., totaled a personal Day 1 best of 3,235 points, behind her strong showing in the high jump, where she leaped 6-0 (1.83m). Balentine began the day with the seventh-best 100-meter hurdles (14.77) followed by the high jump. She then threw 37-1.25 (11.31m) in the shot, which was the fourth-best of the day and concluded by running 26.77 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
Balentine entered the competition ranked No. 1 in the Big West. She won a bronze medal in the heptathlon at last year's Western Athletic Conference Championships.
Junior
Kaleigh Morrison also achieved a first-day PR with 2,883 points and is currently in seventh place. The Tigard, Ore., native also set PRs in the 100-meter hurdles (14.75) and 200-meters (26.71).
Junior
Amanda Alvarez is eighth with 2,775 points. In the final event, she broke the UH heptathlon event record in the 200-meters, previously held by Emily Sheppard, with a personal best time of 25.21 seconds.
Sophomore
Zhane Santiago was scheduled to participate in the event but pulled out.
