LOUISVILLE, Ky.—University of Hawai'i softball pitcher
Kaia Parnaby became just the 11th Rainbow Wahine in history to be named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American. Parnaby, a senior southpaw who was the cornerstone of the 2013 team, was selected to the third team which was announced on Wednesday.
Parnaby (39-7, 16-2 BWC) recorded arguably the best pitching single-season in UH and Big West Conference history. She broke two long-standing BWC records and led the NCAA in victories for nine straight weeks and finished the season ranked No. 2 nationally in wins; No. 5 with 342 strike outs; and No. 5 with 13 shutouts. Her 39 wins trumped the old mark of 35 set by Cal Poly Pomona's Rhonda Wheatley in 1987 as well as the former Hawai'i record of 32 set by Melissa Coogan in 2003. In addition, Parnaby racked up 342 strikeouts to pass former UH standout Brooke Wilkins from the top spot in both BWC and Hawai'i history. Wilkins, who mentored Parnaby in their native Australia, fanned 325 batters in 1994. Parnaby also became just the fifth pitcher in league history and first Rainbow Wahine to log 300 innings in a season. Her 312.2 innings ranks her No. 4 in the Big West record book and No. 1 in UH history, passing Coogan's 281.0 in 2003.
Parnaby finished her career ranked No. 2 in wins (86), shutouts (32), and strike outs (794); No. 3 in complete games (89); and No. 4 with 724.0 innings pitched in the Rainbow Wahine record books. She is just the fourth Hawai'i pitcher to earn the prestigious honor, joining Wilkins (1994, '95), Kate Robinson (2007), and
Stephanie Ricketts (2012). Parnaby was the only representative of the Big West Conference in this year's All-America teams.
Parnaby, who was voted Big West Pitcher of the Year, helped lead the Rainbow Wahine win their sixth conference overall title and third in last four seasons. It marked UH's first Big West crown since 1994 after capturing four titles in the last 16 years as members of the Western Athletic Conference. Hawai'i wrapped up a solid 2013 campaign with a 2-2 performance in their 11th appearance in the NCAA Tournament's Seattle Regional. Hawai`i's 45 wins were the most by a Big West squad since Long Beach State won 51 games in 2004. She was selected BWC Pitcher of the Week five times this season.
