RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Pi'ikea Kitamura had three hits and Marc Flores added a pair of RBI but it wasn't enough to prevent the University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team from losing 4-2 to UC Riverside on Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex.

UC Riverside scored three fourth-inning runs to help finish the season 14-32 overall and 10-17 in the Big West Conference. The Rainbows end the season at 16-35 and 11-16 in their first season in the league.

Matt Cooper (3-8) suffered the loss for UH, allowing three earned runs on six hits in four and two-thirds innings. Jon Flinn came on in the fifth inning and allowed just one hit in three and one-third innings of relief work.

Zach Varela (5-0) got the win for the Highlanders, tossing five and two-thirds innings allowing one earned run on six hits. Clayton Pestridge batted 2-4 with one run for UCR with Bart Steponovich adding a pair of hits.

After stranding three base runners in the first two innings, two in scoring position, the 'Bows broke through with a run in the third inning. Kaeo Aliviado (1 H, 1 R) scored off a sacrifice fly by Flores to put his team up 1-0 after UH's half of the third inning.

Kyle Boudreau (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) then led off UCR's big fourth inning with a double and scored on an RBI single by David Andriese (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI). The Highlanders added their second run when Pestridge scored from third on an errant pick off attempt by Cooper.

Stephen Ventimilia scored a run one inning later to cut the Highlander lead to 3-2, but that was as close as the 'Bows would get as UCR added one more run to complete the scoring.
