Day 2 Results
AUSTIN, Texas – University of Hawai'i high jumper
Samantha Balentine's bid for a trip to the NCAA Championships came to an end on the second day of the West Preliminary Round Friday at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Balentine, a senior from Lodi, Wash., entered the meet ranked third in the West Region and 10
th nationally but struggled on Friday clearing only 5-7 (1.70m) to tie for 15
th out of 45 competitors. She cleared her first attempts at 5-5 (1.65) and 5-7 but missed on all three attempts at 5-8.75 (1.75m), a mark which would have placed her in the top 12 and qualified for the Championships.
The Big West Conference champion was thrown off of her routine due to a lengthy weather delay that pushed back the start of the high jump to 9:00 p.m. CT, nearly three hours later than expected. In addition, cool and wet conditions contributed to a less than par performance.
The top 12 finishers, led by two-time defending NCAA champion and Olympic silver medalist Brigetta Barrett of Arizona, qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships next month in Eugene, Ore.
UH's
Amanda Alvarez will compete in the triple jump on Saturday.
