AUSTIN, Texas – University of Hawai'i track and field athletes
Amanda Alvarez and
Joanna Franke-Kuhn competed on the first day of the NCAA West Preliminary Round Thursday at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Alvarez, a senior from Vancouver, Wash., participated in the long jump, the first of two events she will compete during the three-day preliminary round. The Big West bronze medalist tied for 24
th with a new personal best jump of 19-8 (5.99m), bettering her previous best set at the Big West Championships. She also finished ahead of the two athletes who placed ahead of her at the conference meet.
Competing in her first NCAA West Preliminary, Franke-Kuhn placed 36
th in the hammer throw. The junior from Duncan, British Columbia and Big West silver medalist threw 183-0 (55.78m) on her first attempt and could not better that mark on her next two throws.
The top 12 finishers at the preliminary round qualifies for the NCAA Outdoor Championships next month in Eugene, Ore.
UH high jumper
Samantha Balentine will compete on Friday while Alvarez is scheduled to compete in the triple jump on Saturday.
