TOWSON, Md.—University of Hawai'i senior centerfielder
Kelly Majam became just the third Rainbow Wahine to earn Capitol One Academic All-America® Division I softball honors, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. Majam was voted to the Academic All-American second team and was the only player from the Big West Conference to be selected to the elite list.
Majam graduated earlier this month with a bachelor's degree in secondary education in health and physical education. Earlier this year, Majam was named the University of Hawai'i's Big West Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and she also was co-winner of the Jack Bonham Award—UH's highest student-athlete award—with
Stephanie Ricketts, in recognition of their outstanding performances on the playing field and in the classroom. She is also a three-time all-conference scholar-athlete, a three-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) scholar-athlete, and she was a Senior CLASS Award nominee for 2013. Majam has earned the highest GPA on the softball team for every year of her Rainbow Wahine career.
On the field, the Big West Defensive Player of the Year, set a new conference single-season record with 59 runs scored while committing just one error in 58 games. Majam also led the conference and the 'Bows with 18 home runs, 42 walks, 125 total bases; a .723 slugging percentage; and a .459 on-base percentage. She also led Hawai`i with a team-high with 13 doubles (tied with
Keiki Carlos); 11 stolen bases, 17 multiple-hit games and 11 multiple-RBI games. Thirty-three of her 54 hits went for extra bases and she reached base safely in 52-of-58 games this year—including a team-best “reached safely streak” of 19-straight games.
The only other two Rainbow Wahine to ever earn this prestigious honor was Tracy Loo in 1992 and Majam's former softball teammate and women's basketball player, Ricketts, last year in 2012. Only nine Hawai'i players have ever earned CoSIDA All-District 8 honors 12 times. Majam and former Rainbow Wahine stand-out Clare Warwick are the only two UH players to earn all-district honors all three years that players are eligible.
The Capital One Division I Academic All-America® program is financially supported by the NCAA national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2012-13 D-I Academic All-America® teams program.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
