Women’s Water Polo Falls To UCLA in NCAAs

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team concluded its 2013 season with a 13-8 loss to UCLA in the third-place match of the 2013 NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon at Blodgett Pool on the campus of Harvard University.
 
After a tight first half, UCLA (28-7) slowly pulled away in the second frame to deny UH its highest finish in the NCAAs. The Rainbow Wahine (22-11) have now finished in fourth place in all four of its NCAA appearances.
 
Senior attacked Monika Eggens concluded her storied career at UH with a team-high four goals. Eggens, who was named ot the all-tournament team, had a hat trick less than a quarter into the match and with her performance set a new UH single-season scoring mark with 101 goals. She also leaves as the school's all-time leading scorer with 252 goals in her four-year career.  
 
Eggens' scoring spree in the first half had the Rainbow Wahine thinking upset. Her fourth goal of the match on a  penalty shot with two minutes left in the first half gave UH a 6-5 lead. But the Bruins scored two straight goals to close the half to take a 7-6 lead at the break.
 
The Rainbow Wahine struggled to score in the second half as UCLA out-scored UH, 6-2 in the final two periods to put the game away. Sami Hill was stout in goal for UCLA, recording 13 saves. Freshman Rachel Fattal had a team-high four goals for the Bruins, who defeated UH for the second time this season.
 
Despite the loss, the Rainbow Wahine enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in program history, capturing both the Big West regular-season and tournament titles in the team's debut season in the league. It was UH's first league title in the sport. Meanwhile, the 22 wins were the most by UH since the 2001 squad went 25-10.
 
Sunday's match marked the final appearances for Eggens and fellow seniors Hannah Hogue, Katie Teets and Amarens Genee. Genee had a pair of goals for the Rainbow Wahine against UCLA and leaves as the school's third all-time leading scorer (185).
