IRVINE, Calif. – For the second straight day the Rainbows ran into a dominant Anteater pitching performance as the University of Hawai'i baseball team lost to No. 27 UC Irvine 4-1 on Saturday at Anteater Ballpark.
UH (7-20, 2-3 BWC) managed just three hits on the afternoon as Matt Whitehouse (3-2) struck out nine Rainbows in seven and two-thirds innings to earn the win.
Corey MacDonald (3-3) had a strong outing of his own for Hawai'i before Taylor's homerun in the seventh inning put UCI up 4-0. MacDonald had set down nine straight hitters at one point but suffered the loss in six and two-thirds innings of work. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
After Dominique Taylor's homerun in the seventh inning, UH put together a mini rally one inning later.
LJ Brewster, who earned the start in left field, reach on an error and would move to third on a pair of ground outs by
Austin Wobrock and
Stephen Ventimilia (0-4). Pi'ikea Kitamura scored Brewster with a base hit through the left side of the infield but was caught stealing on the next at bat to end the threat.
Kitamura led the 'Bows hitting 2-3 with an RBI and
Austin Wobrock went 1-3 to extend his hitting streak to five games.
Chris Rabago led the Anteaters (19-8, 2-3 BWC) for the second straight day, batting 3-4 with two runs.
