HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team concluded it regular season with a 53-43 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Senior Night at the Stan Sheriff Center. After a rough first half, UH overpowered the Titans in the second half to send its departing players—
Kanisha Bello,
Monica DeAngelis,
Vicky Tagalicod and
Stephanie Ricketts—out on a winning note at home.
UH (17-12, 13-5 Big West) finished its first season back in the Big West in a tie for second place. It's the program's highest league finish since the 2001-02 squad tied for second in the Western Athletic Conference with a 14-4 record. It was the team's sixth win in its last seven games, while UH finished an impressive 8-1 at home in Big West play.
Kamilah Martin led UH with her second straight double-double and 13th of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Tagalicod, who earned the starting nod in her final home appearance, finished with 11 points. Shawna Lei-Kuehu added 10 points for the 'Bows.
UH held CSUF to just 24 percent shooting for the game, including 17 percent shooting in the decisive second half, while avenging a loss to the Titans in the team's Big West opener in January.
The game got off to an ugly as the teams combined to miss 19 of their first 22 shots. UH missed 11 of its first 13 shots and shot just 22 percent in the first half as the Titans held a 22-18 lead at the break.
The 'Bows, however, turned it around in the second half. UH went on a 10-2 run to start the half to take the lead, a lead it would not relinquish. The Rainbow Wahine built its lead to as many as 15 points, shooting 46 percent after the break, while holding CSUF to 4-of-23 shooting in the second.
The Rainbow Wahine, who tied Cal Poly in the regular-season standings, will enter next week' Big West Tournament as the No. 3 seed. UH receives a first-round bye and will begin play on Wednesday, March 13 (6:00 p.m. PT/3:00 p.m. HT) at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif.
