HONOLULU –
Corey MacDonald was the architect of UH's only win of the season but couldn't produce a victory tonight as the University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team lost to Gonzaga, 3-1, on Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium.
MacDonald (1-2) followed up his complete game win against Loyola Marymount with another strong performance. He allowed two runs on six hits in six and two-third innings, but could not prevent Hawai'i from falling to 1-14 on the season.
Tyler Olsen (2-1) tossed a complete game, surrendering just one run on four hits and striking out six Rainbow hitters. Cabe Reiten (2 H, 1 R) and Brock Slavin (2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) provided the bulk of the offense for Gonzaga.
The Zags (8-4-1) struck first with a pair of runs in the third inning. Reiten doubled to the left centerfield gap to kick off the inning, then came home on a Slavin base hit. Slavin stole second and was driven home by a Mitchell Gunsolus (1 H, 1 RBI) hit through the middle of the infield.
UH broke through in the bottom of the third when
Austin Wobrock (1 H, 1 RBI) ripped an Olsen pitch to right field and stretched it into a triple. He scored one batter later on
Kaeo Aliviado's ground out to third. Aliviado had one run and one RBI on the night.
UH looked prime to tie the game when
Tyler Young's (1-2) pop up to right field dropped for a base hit and put runners at the corners with one out. But a Wobrock strikeout and an Aliviado infield pop up ended the threat.
Hawai'i and Gonzaga will play game three of the series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
