HONOLULU—The No. 18/22 University of Hawai`i softball team (26-7, 4-0 Big West) defeated UC Davis, 5-4 in 10 innings. Freshman
Keiki Carlos drilled two home runs—including the walk-off solo shot in the bottom of the 10th inning that lifted UH to the win. Senior southpaw
Kaia Parnaby earned the complete game win, tossing all 10 innings.
Parnaby raised her record to 24-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play. She gave up four runs—three of which were earned—on nine hits with three walks and 11 strike outs. It was the ninth time this season that she struck out over 10 batters in a game. Parnaby finished the game strong, retiring 11 of the last 12 batters.
The Aggies (13-15, 0-1 BWC) scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Megan Guzman led off with a base hit through the leftside of the infield. Later, with two outs, Kelly Shulze hit a two run home run to centerfield to give UC Davis the early 2-0 lead.
Hawai`i got one run back in the bottom of the third when
Kelly Majam lifted a home run over the left-centerfield fence. It marked her 11th homer of the season and 65th of her career. The blast cut UH's deficit to 2-1.
But UC Davis got the run back in the top of the fifth when Krista Bava reached on a single and advanced to second on a fielding error on the leftfielder. She moved to third on a ground out to third and scored with two outs on a wild pitch that gave UC Davis a 3-1 lead going to the bottom of the fifth.
Hawai`i then leapfrogged the Aggies in the bottom of the fifth.
Brynne Buchanan started the rally with a single to the left-centerfield gap. The ball ricocheted off the leftfielder allowing Buchanan to hustle into second. Majam then was walked to put runners at first and second. After a fly out to right for the second out, Carlos launched her first home run of the game to left-centerfield. The three-run blast pushed UH to its first lead of the game, 4-3.
The Aggies fought back in the top of the sixth, knotting the score at 4-4 on an RBI single by JJ Wagoner that scored Chandler Wagner from second with two outs.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 10th, when Carlos came through in the clutch with her second home run blast of the game. The shot sailed over the centerfield fence. It was her sixth of the season and the first time in Carlos' career that she's hit two home runs in one game.
It was UH's third extra inning game of the season, and second straight home extra inning game in a row. Parnaby has earned all three wins of those wins.
The Aggies' starter Justine Vela also fired a complete game in the loss. She tossed nine-plus innings and gave up five runs on eight hits with five walks and 11 strike outs. Vela was able to get 13 batters out on pop-flys or fly-outs and had just one ground ball out which resulted in a 6-4-3 double play. Vela's record fell to 8-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
The two teams will square off in the series ending double-header on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
