Men’s Volleyball Closes Out Home Schedule With UCSB Series

Lone senior Matthew Cheape will be honored following Saturday's match

HONOLULU – The 12th-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team closes out its home schedule with a two-match Mountain Pacific Sports Federation series against No. 8 UC Santa Barbara, Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Match time is 7:00 p.m. both nights.
 
Following Saturday's match, UH's lone senior Matthew Cheape will be honored during the traditional Senior Night ceremony. Prior to this season, the Mililani, O'ahu native had appeared in only 14 matches in his first three seasons. This season, Cheape has started nearly every match, averaging 1.38 digs per set.
 
The Warriors (9-14, 8-12 MPSF) are coming off a series sweep of Pacific last week in Honolulu. UH won both matches in four sets which improved this year's win total to nine, surpassing last year's total. Opposite Brook Sedore and outside hitter Sinisa Zarkovic led the Warriors, combining for 71 kills, averaging 4.63 and 4.25 per set, respectively.
 
Entering Tuesday's non-conference match against Concordia, the Gauchos (11-12, 8-10) have won their last four matches and six of seven. Sophomore opposite Matt Marsh leads the team with a 3.35 kill average however opposite Eric Licht has been the team's go-to player during its recent surge.
 
UH's 42 wins in the series history is tied for the third most against any opponent in school history.

Tickets: Lower-level $11; Upper-level adult $8, Upper-level senior citizen $7; Upper-level student (4-HS) $3. UH-Manoa students receive admission with validated ID.
Promotions: Manoa Maniacs will provide free pizzas for the first 50 students who attend Friday and Saturday's matches. The University of Hawaii Federal Credit Union will distribute 1,500 team photos and honor senior Matthew Cheape with his commemorative plaque during a special post-game ceremony.
Series Information: UH leads the overall series 42-31. UCSB swept the series last season in Santa Barbara, Calif., to close out the regular season. UH leads the series 21-14 in Honolulu. Prior to last season, the teams split the season series eight times since 2001.
 
What's Next: UH will host its annual alumni match, Sunday, April 7 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center before closing out the regular season with a two-match series at UC San Diego, April 12-13.
