HONOLULU – Matt Cooper extended his scoreless streak to 16 and two-thirds innings and had a career-high 10 strikeouts as the University of Hawai'i Rainbow baseball team won its first series with a 7-0 shutout of Wichita State on Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium.

Cooper (2-2) had his second straight scoreless outing in earning the win for the Rainbows (5-16). He threw 119 pitches in seven and two-thirds innings of work while allowing eight hits. Starter Kris Gardner (2-2) was the pitcher of record for the Shockers (12-11), allowing three runs on five hits in three complete innings.

Stephen Ventimilia batted 2-4 with three runs and one RBI, Pi'ikea Kitamura had two hits and three RBI, and Trevor Podratz had a run and two hits including a double in the second inning.

Tyler Baker, Erik Harbutz, and Dayne Parker each had two hits to lead WSU.

Leading 4-0, the 'Bows put the game away with three runs in the eighth inning. Kitamura's two-out hit with the bases loaded scored a pair of runs, and while he was getting caught in a rundown Ventimilia scampered home for the third run of the inning.

Wichita State saw its best opportunity go by the wayside in the seventh inning. Baker and Harbutz singled to open the inning and advanced a base on a groundout by Mikel Mucha (1-3). Kitamura then fielded a grounder at third and gunned down Baker attempting to score from third.

Conner George had a hit and an RBI which happened in the first inning. He pulled a full count Gardner pitch though the left side of the infield to score Ventimilia for the first run of the game.

Podratz led off the second inning with a double to the right field alley and scored on Ventimilia's bloop double. Kitamura then joined in the extra base barrage, smacking a two-bagger also to the right field alley to extend UH's lead to 3-0.

The 'Bows and Shockers conclude their series on Sunday. First pitch at Les Murakami Stadium is set for 12:05 p.m.
