SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The University of Hawai`i women's basketball team (17-14, 13-5 BWC) fell to San Diego 61-49 in the opening round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament on Thursday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The loss ended the season for the resurgent Rainbow Wahine who had advanced to the post-season for the first time in 10 years.

Junior guard Sydney Haydel led UH both on offense and on the glass with 11 points and six rebounds. Haydel was 3-of-7 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. It was the third time this season that Haydel posted double-digits in points. She had two assists and a blocked shot. Junior wing Shawna-Lei Kuehu added nine points with two rebounds, two assists and a block while junior forward Kamilah Martin chipped in eight points and five boards—snapping her string of games with 10 or more points at nine and her streak of double-doubles at three games.

In the first half, UH was in the game neck-and-neck with the Toreros through the first 12 minutes. Haydel's mid-range jumper with 9:12 left cut their deficit to just one point, trailing 16-17. But USD then went on an 11-2 run and UH's offense could not score a field goal in the next 9:09. DeAngelis drained a trey with three seconds left on the clock to go into the half, trailing 28-21. DeAngelis and Haydel went into the break with a team-high six points apiece while Haydel and Martin both had three boards to lead the 'Bows. San Diego led at the half, 28-21.

Ashleigh Karaitiana started the second half with a jumper to cut their deficit to five points at 28-23, but that's as close as the 'Bows would get. USD then went on an 8-to-0 run and never looked back. Hawai`i made a 5-to-0 run with less than four minutes left to cut the lead to single digits at 56-47, but the Toreros responded by scoring the next five points to seal the win.

As a team, UH struggled on offense, shooting just 7-of-28 for 25% in field goals in the first half and in the game, shot just 32% to San Diego's 49%. The 'Bows were out-rebounded, 41-to-27 for a difference of 14—a season high for UH. The Toreros also out-scored UH 28-to-18 in the paint, although UH out-scored USD 10-to-8 in points off of turnovers and 20-to-14 in bench scoring.

The Toreros Amy Kame scored a game-high 19 points while Maya Hood and Klara Wijenberg secured a game-high seven rebounds.

After finishing the regular season winning six of their last seven games, the 'Bows dropped their last two games in their Big West tournament opener against Cal State Fullerton and Thursday night's WNIT opener at San Diego. Under first year head coach Laura Beeman, UH recorded its best conference record this season since Vince Goo's 2001-02 team went 14-4. It was also the first time UH has finished with a winning record since 2006-07 when then head coach Jim Bolla led his team to a 15-14 record.

It marked the final game for senior transfer Monica DeAngelis and Stephanie Ricketts (who was unable to make the trip) as well as Vicky Tagalicod and Kanisha Bello.
