HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team nearly made a stirring comeback before eventually succumbing to Cal Poly, 64-61 on Senior Night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Warriors (17-12, 10-7 Big West) trailed by 13 points with less than five minutes remaining and put themselves in position twice to tie the game in the final seconds, but were unable to complete the rally.
It was a disappointing setback for UH in the final home appearance for seniors
Hauns Brereton,
Vander Joaquim and
Jace Tavita. The loss to Cal Poly (15-12, 10-6 Big West)—coupled with UC Irvine's win over Long Beach State—slid UH down to fifth in the league standings with one regular-season game remaining. It was a rare home setback for the 'Bows who entered the game having won seven of its last eight at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UH also looked to avenge its most lopsided loss of the year when it fell by 29 points at Cal Poly on Jan. 24. Instead the Mustangs completed a sweep of UH, while moving a half game ahead of them in the Big West standings. Chris Eversley led Cal Poly with a game-high 25 points, including seven straight points for the Mustangs during a key second-half run.
Isaac Fotu led UH with17 points while adding nine rebounds. Joaquim finished with his 11
th double-double of the year (15 points, 10 rebounds), Brereton poured in 13 points, while Tavita finished with six points and seven assists.
Like Thursday's game versus UCSB, UH was out of rhythm early and trailed by many as seven points on a pair of occasion in the first half. The 'Bows closed the gap to 27-25 at the break and trailed despite committing just two turnovers (UH committed just three for the game) and holding Cal Poly to just 33 percent shooting in the first half.
UH took the lead briefly, 36-35, five minutes into the second half on a Brereton three-pointer. But the Mustangs re-took the lead on the next possession and wouldn't relinquish it the rest of the way. Cal Poly ultimately built a 61-48 lead with 4:48 remaining.
Hawai'i, however, would not fold and behind an energized crowd cut the lead to three points on two occasions, the last of which came on a
Brandon Jawato three-pointer with 53 seconds left. UH had a chance to tie the game in the final moments but missed a three-point attempt with 10 seconds left—then after Cal Poly missed a free throw—UH was unable to get off a shot on the game's final possession.
The 'Bows will now close the regular season on the road when they take on Cal State Northridge on Thursday, March 7. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT).
