LAS VEGAS, Nev. –
Kalei Hanawahine had three hits, two runs, and two RBI,
Corey MacDonald pitched a complete game and the University of Hawai'i baseball team notched its first win with an 8-3 victory over Loyola Marymount on Saturday at the UNLV Rebel Classic. The Rainbows (1-10) also avenged a loss to the Lions (4-7) on Thursday in the tournament opener.
MacDonald (1-1) was at his best in earning the win, allowing just one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts. MacDonald held the Lions scoreless outside of their three third-inning runs, two of them unearned. Aaron Griffen (1-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in four and two-thirds innings.
Marc Flores had his best hitting performance of the season, going 2-4 and scoring three runs.
Adam Hurley had two hits and one RBI and
Trevor Podratz added two hits, one run, and one RBI.
The 'Bows struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the third, ending an 11-inning scoreless draught against LMU. Hanawahine scored the first run off an errant throw by Lion third baseman Cole Trezek (0-2). Trezek attempted to throw out
Austin Wobrock (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) running to first base, but the ball skirted by first base allowing Hanawahine to run the bases and score. Wobrock later scored on an RBI-hit by Hurley.
LMU answered just one-half inning later with three runs to take the lead. A comedy of errors saw the Lions score all their runs on no hits and two Hawai'i errors. MacDonald walked Zac Fujimoto (1 R) and Brice Savage (1 R) to open the inning, then errors by him and
Andre Real following a Joey Boney (1 H, 1 R) bunt allowed both runners to score.
Undaunted, UH retook the lead for good in the fourth inning when doubles by Flores and Hanawahine, and an RBI base hit by Wobrock put three runs on the board to give the 'Bows a 5-3 lead.
UH closes the Rebel Classic on Sunday against host UNLV at 6:05 p.m. PT (4:05 p.m. HT). The 'Bows will remain in Las Vegas following the tournament and conclude the trip with a single non-conference game against UNLV on Monday.
