IRVINE, Calif.  – The No. 3 seed University of Hawai'i women's basketball team was upset by No. 8 seed Cal State Fullerton, 66-51, in the second round of the Big West Tournament Wednesday night at the Bren Events Center.

After finishing in a tie for second in the regular-season standings, the Rainbow Wahine entered the tournament with high hopes. Instead the team made a premature exit its first appearance in a Big West Tournament since 1996—a year UH won the tournament title and advanced to the NCAAs.

The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 17-13 with the loss and now await their possible postseason fate following this weekend's action. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Laura Beeman, UH has already racked up its most wins since 2006 and its highest league finish since 2002.

UH entered the game having won six of its final seven regular-season games. Among those wins was a 53-43 decision over CSUF in the regular-season finale last Saturday. Meeting just four days later, the Titans (11-21) avenged that loss while punching a ticket to Friday's semifinals versus top seed Pacific.

The Titans forced 22 UH turnovers and shot 57 percent in the decisive second half in defeating the Rainbow Wahine for the second time in California this season.

Mya Olivier scored a game-high 17, including 12 points after the break, to lead the Titans to the win. Olivier's three-pointer with 2:30 remaining effectively dashed UH's hopes, extending the team's lead to 12 points.

Kamilah Martin led UH with 15 points and 13 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season and fourth in the last five games. The junior, who was the only UH player to score in double-digits,  also led the team with a season-high five assists.

The game started similarly to the regular season-finale on March 9. The Titans scored 11 unanswered points and UH converted just one field goal through the first seven minutes of action as the team fell behind early. UH faced another eight point deficit later in the half but closed strong as a 9-1 Rainbow Wahine run knotted the game, 25-25, at the break.

The second half continued to be close all the way up to the 11 minute mark. That's when the Titans made their crucial push. CSUF went on 14-3 run, sparked by 11 unanswered points, to take a double-digit lead with seven minutes remaining. UH closed the gap to seven points with four minutes left, but would get no closer as Olivier hit a clutch three-pointer and the Titans sealed the game on the free throw line.
