SEATTLE, Wash. – University of Hawai'i sophomore
Zhane Santiago broke the school's 60-meter hurdles record twice during Saturday's Husky Classic at the University of Washington's Demsey Indoor.
The Hau'ula, O'ahu native, broke the record in the prelims with a time of 8.66 seconds, then set it again in the finals with a mark of 8.59 seconds which was good for fifth place. The previous record was 8.68 second by Thalia Amanakis in 2008.
Santiago was one of four Rainbow Wahine hurdlers to run personal bests in the event along with
Amanda Alvarez (8.87),
Samantha Esperanza (9.00), and
Samantha Balentine (9.23). Balentine, a senior from Lodi, Calif., also equaled her personal best in the high jump, tying for first with a mark of 5-10 (1.78m).
Alvarez, a junior from Vancouer, Wash., placed second in the triple jump – and was the top collegiate finisher – with a leap of 39-8.75 (12.11). She also set a new personal best in the long jump (18-7.75/5.68m), placing fourth overall but tops among collegiate competitors. In both events, Alvarez finished only behind members of the U.S. Olympic Development Program.
