SEATTLE, Wash. – University of Hawai'i senior
Amanda Alvarez captured the bronze medal in the triple jump on the final day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at the University of Washington's Dempsey Indoor.
The Vancouver, Wash., native completed an outstanding showing at the conference meet where she set two UH records and grabbed one medal in four events, which included the five-discipline pentathlon.
On Saturday, Alvarez placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 40-0 (12.19m). Instead of her usual 16-step run up, she was limited to 10-step and still set a new personal best mark. In the opening jumps, she leaped 39-10.5 (12.15m) on her first attempt which qualified for the finals and improved her mark by four centimeters on her fifth jump.
One day earlier, Alvarez competed in three events and set new UH records in the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles and pentathlon long jump.
Sophomore
Zhane Santiago placed seventh in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.63 seconds. During the two-day meet, the Kahuku, O'ahu native scored five team points for the Rainbow Wahine, which included a sixth-place finish in the long jump on Friday.
Senior
Samantha Balentine tied for fourth in the high jump after clearing 5-7.25 (1.71m). One Friday she placed fifth in the pentathlon and posted the competition's best high jump at 5-8.75 (1.75m).
In all, the Rainbow Wahine set 17 personal best marks and scored 18 team points, better than the three other Big West Conference teams – Cal State Northridge, UC Irvine, and Long Beach State – competing in the meet.
