HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team got back in the win column with a resounding 114-63 blowout over UH Hilo Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 3-2 on the season after snapping a two-game slide with its biggest offensive explosion in nearly four decades.
UH used its superior size and pressure defense to roll past the Division II Vulcans (2-2). The 51-point margin of victory was the third-largest in school history while the 114 points was the seventh highest ever and the highest since UH scored 117 points versus Memphis State in 1974.
Christian Standhardinger led five Rainbow Warrior in double-digits with 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting.
Isaac Fotu recorded 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while
Aaron Valdes chipped in 16 off the bench. Point guards
Keith Shamburger and
Quincy Smith were efficient with 15 combined assists and just two turnovers. All 14 players who suited up saw action, with 12 of them getting in the scoresheet.
UH trailed, 8-6, in the opening minutes of the game, but went on a 17-3 run over the next six minutes to stake a double-digit lead. Spurred by their full-court press, which garnered 13 points off turnovers, the 'Bows led by as many as 17 before taking a 48-34 lead into the locker room.
The 'Bows really opened it up in the second half, nearly doubling its lead in the first five minutes after the break. UH shot 68 percent from the floor in the second half and finished at 63 percent clip for the game.
UH dominated in nearly every statistical category, particularly inside where the 'Bows out-scored the Vulcans an astounding 70-22 in the paint, and out-rebounded them, 51-22. UH recorded a season-high nine blocks and went over the top with nine dunks.
The 'Bows remained undefeated against its sister school in just the sixth meeting all-time between the teams in the regular-season.
The Rainbow Warriors continue its three-game homestand next week when it hosts New Orleans on Wednesday, Nov. 27. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
