Women's Hoops Hosts Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic

Game Notes

HONOLULU--The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team (1-1, 0-0 BWC) return home to host the 2013 Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic with Washington State (1-1), Ole Miss (1-1) and West Virginia (0-1) all competing in the three-day tournament at the Stan Sheriff Center from Nov. 15-17. Hawai'i split its opening road games in Arizona, falling at Arizona State, 84-44 but showed its resilincey by bouncing back with a gritty performance the following day to knock off Northern Arizona, 74-66.

Through the first two games of the season, it has been a total team effort for the Rainbow Wahine with all 11 players suited seeing playing time. UH's standout forward, Kamilah Jackson leads the 'Bows averaging 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Jackson, the most decorated Rainbow Wahine in several years, now has 1,225 career points and is closing in on becoming just the second Hawai'i player to record 1,000 rebounds. Currently, she has 967 and needs just 33 more to hit the record milestone. She is already second all-time in UH rebounding history, and is still ranked No. 7 in scoring. At Arizona State (Nov. 9), Jackson scored 11 points with six boards. She then ramped up her game at Northern Arizona (Nov. 10) she led UH a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds.

Ashleigh Karaitiana has come off the bench to provide a spark to the 'Bows in the first two games. She is second on the team averaging 11.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. She also leads UH with four steals and five assists. The Sydney, Australia native drained two key treys against NAU--one at the first half buzzer to bring the 'Bows to within one point at the break, 33-32. Then in the second half with UH down by three, Karaitiana hit another 3-pointer to tie the score at 47-47 with 11:37 left and the 'Bows never looked back en route to the 74-66 win in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Senior guard Sydney Haydel flashed her offensive skills off at Northern Arizona, pouring in 15 points--two off her career high--on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor. More importantly, she sank a career-high seven free-throws on seven attempts, with four of them coming with less than a minute and a half in the game to seal the win. Known for her defensive prowess, Haydel will be able to open things up for the offense if she can continue to look for her shot.
