Women's Golf Places Second in Rainbow Wahine Invitational

Rainboow Wahine Invitational Final Results

WAHIAWA, O'ahu--The University of Hawai'i women's golf team came up one stroke short of winning its first tournament in nearly 20 years as Sacramento State captured the 2013 Rainbow Wahine Invitational. Hawai'i shot a final round of 304 and was edged out by the Hornets who rallied from a three-stroke deficit to capture the title shooting a final round of 300 and finishing at 39-over par. The Rainbow Wahine finished in a tie for second with New Mexico State at 39-over for the tourney at the Leilehua Golf course on Wednesday.

It is just the eighth time that the Rainbow Wahine have finished runner-up in a tournament in the history of their program. The 'Bows started the day with a two stroke lead which they held until the middle of the round when New Mexico State edged past the 'Bows and later jumped out to a three stroke lead. The Aggies eventually fell back, while Hawai`i continued to battle, eventually regaining the lead by one shot with about six holes to go. Down the stretch, the 'Bows fought hard to stay in contention, and at one point with about three holes left, there was  three-way tie between Sacramento State, Colorado State and Hawaii. But in the end Sac State edged out UH for the win in an exciting finish to the tournament.

In all, five Rainbow Wahine finished in the Top 20—three of which were playing as individuals. Three freshman—Raquel Ek, Izzy Leung, and Daezsa Tomas (individual)—all finished in a six-way tie for fourth place at 8-over. Also playing as individuals, Brianna Becker finished 10th at 9-over and Charlee Kapiioho-Sagum was in a six-way tie for 11th at 10-over.

Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine were Nichole Cruz, who concluded the tourney in a three-way tie for 17th at +11; Kelli-Anne Katsuda who ended tied for 20th at 12-over; and Liana Otake who placed in a tie for 30th at 18-over.

Individually, Charlotte Jaengkit of Grand Canyon defeated Northern Arizona's Kaitlen Parsons in a two-hole, sudden-death playoff to capture the individual title. Jaenkit fired the low round of the tournament on the final day with a 68. She began the day in a tie for 14th. Both Jaengkit and Parsons finished the tournament at 3-over par. Jaenkit won the tournament when she carded a par on the second hole.

The Rainbow Wahine are back in action on Nov. 4-5 in Kohala, Hawai'i when they host the Pac 12 Preview at Nanea.
