HONOLULU – Fans got their first glimpse of the 2013-14 University of Hawai'i men's basketball team with the Green & White Scrimmage Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The team conducted a pair of 20-minute scrimmages and a crowd-pleasing dunk contest, then concluded the night with an autograph session.
In the first 20-minute scrimmage the Green Team ran away from the Black Team, 42-27.
Isaac Fotu led the way with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
Brandon Spearman and
Quincy Smith chipped in nine points each.
Christian Standhardinger, meanwhile scored 16 of the Black Team's 27 points in a losing effort.
The team then held a rousing dunk contest. Newcomers
Mike Thomas,
Quincy Smith and
Garrett Nevels battled it out with
Aaron Valdes, last year's runner-up. The redshirt freshman was crowned champion this time around with a sweet 360-degree slam with an assist off the side of the backboard from
Keith Shamburger.
Davis Rozitis, meanwhile, provided some comic relief during the dunk contest. The senior center unveiled lime green retro shorts while also sporting a headband and knee pads before dunking over a trio of prone UH coaches in the paint.
Following the dunk contest, the Rainbow Warriors—perhaps the most diverse team in the nation—conducted its second 20 minute scrimmage with the teams divided into domestic and international squads. Team USA ended up defeating Team World, 52-43 behind a balanced attack. Standhardinger, a first-team all-conference pick last year, did his best again in a losing effort with 22 points, 11 rebounds and four assists for Team World.
The Rainbow Warriors will return to the court on Halloween Night, Thursday, Oct. 31 when they host BYU-Hawai'i in an exhibition game at 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. Admission is free with a canned good donation for the Hawai'i Food Bank.
