PROVO, Utah – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team put up a fight in its rematch with No. 2 Brigham Young but still lost in four Saturday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Smith Fieldhouse. Set scores were 25-21, 25-21, 24-26, 25-20.

The Warriors (0-2) dropped both ends of the MPSF series to the Cougars (2-0) for the third straight season.

Sophomore JP Marks led the Warriors with 13 kills and had three of the team's seven service aces. He also tallied eight digs and four blocks. Middle blocker Nick West added nine kills and four blocks while Johann Timmer and Brook Sedore each had two aces for the Warriors.

National player of the year candidate Taylor Sander led the Cougars with a match-high 18 kills on .500 hitting. As a team, BYU hit .350 for the match and totaled 17 blocks.

In Set 1, Sedore's ace – the third of three in the set for the Warriors – tied the score at 14. But a pair of kills by Ben Patch and another by Sander along with a UH hitting error, gave the Cougars a commanding four-point lead at 18-14.

The Warriors closed to within 24-21 after a Patch hitting error but Sander's sixth kill in his sixth attempt closed out the set for the Cougars, who hit .500 as a team.

BYU jumped all over the Warriors in Set 2, taking an early 6-2 lead and extended its lead to 16-10 after Sedore hit into a Cougar triple block. The advantage was 19-12 following Patch's ninth kill.

Facing set point at 24-18, Hawai'i would not go down easily as Timmer's serving – one ace and another that led to a bad set – pulled the Warriors to within 24-21. But with the chance to score another point, Sedore hit into a triple block to end the set.

The Warriors took its first significant lead of the match at 16-13 in the third set after Sedore's second service ace. UH pushed its lead to 19-15 after consecutive kills by West and a block of Sander. The Cougars erased the lead and tied it at 22 with a three-point run capped by a kill by Sander. The teams traded side-outs until the Warriors closed out the set with a kill by West and Marks' third ace of the match.

In the fourth set, the Warriors fell behind 9-5 after three straight hitting errors – two by Marks. Moments later, back-to-back kills by Sander gave the Cougars their largest lead at 17-9. The closest UH would get was four at 20-16 before BYU closed out the match at 25-20.

The Warriors return to Honolulu to host the 19th Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational, Jan. 10-12. One of the country's premiere early season tournaments features UH, UCLA, Penn State, and Ohio State. Matches each day begin at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
