SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team put together another impressive showing in its second trip to Seattle at the UW Invitational Saturday at Dempsey Indoor on the campus of the University of Washington.
A number of Rainbow Wahine set personal bests during the two-day competition, including sophomore
Zhane Santiago, who set PRs in the 60-meter hurdles (8.91) in placing 11
th overall, and in the long jump (18-1.75/5.53m), where she won her flight and placed ninth overall.
Amanda Alvarez eclipsed her previous best in the triple jump, leaping 39-10.75 (12.16m) to place third overall, and second among collegiate competitors.
Other UH athletes setting new PRs were
Samantha Esperanza (9.01) and
Morgan Struble (9.26) in the 60-meter hurdles;
Melody Papalii in the 800-meters (2:19.47); and
Kevyn Murphy in the 3,000-meters (10:20.67).
On Friday,
Samantha Balentine placed ninth in the pentathlon, achieving a personal best of 3,586, more than 100 points better than her previous best. In the process, she also broke a school event-record, breaking the high jump record with a mark of 5-10 (1.78m).
In Saturday's high jump competition, Balentine tied for third after clearing 5-7.75 (1.72m).
The Rainbow Wahine return to Honolulu to host the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, Saturday, Feb. 2 at Clarence T.C. Ching Field.
